QB reset in Boulder: why Salter gives Colorado the best shot vs Wyoming

Colorado is resetting at quarterback. Deion Sanders turns back to Kaidon Salter for Wyoming. The locker room trust is there. The early rotation was about evaluation and timing. Comfort and tempo matter so his feet stay live. Rally behind the staff and get it done.

Conference USA to Big 12 is a different runway. The speed, the disguise, the noise, the small windows that close faster than your second thought. Game one asked Salter to process all of that while fighting off being under the weather. I was there. His body language was not his normal edge, first start, new league, and you could feel him fighting his own timing more than the defense. That is not a talent problem. That is comfort. Game two opened the door to try everything. A good first drive, then the hook on the third series to get the 17 year old snaps, and later a Staub rally that made it easy to say, let us see if the kid has it. Early September is where staffs test chemistry. You learn who communicates cleanly in the huddle, who hits the motion timing, who trusts the protection rules. From the outside, that looks indecisive. Inside the building, that is normal. If you actually chart it, week one was not lost by one quarterback’s mistakes. It was defense, execution, late clock details, and first game play call rhythm. Georgia Tech has since validated that they are no soft opener. And Delaware was exactly where you steal live reps for everyone and see what sticks before the league really starts breathing on you. When Staub hit, you ride the hot hand the next week because that is football. No one should be mad at that process. But there is a point where a team needs one voice under center. That is Salter. He has gone 13 and 1 in a season, he has led a conference title run, and when he is comfortable he is a dual threat headache that forces safeties to cheat and linebackers to stop false stepping. The whole offense changes when his feet are live. Feet live means the pre snap and first read arrive on time so the pump, the shoulder fake, and the edge threat all hit the defense at once. If he is still thinking about the play call or the pace of the signal, you get half speed feet and late hips. Clean the input, the output explodes. This week is about comfort. Faster huddle. Cleaner signal. One or two early, defined throws to get the ball out and sync the sideline. A designed keeper in the first two series to make Wyoming honor the quarterback run. Motion to identify coverage, RPO to punish overhangs, and at least one simple shot off max protect to remind everyone he can drive it. Do not ask him to be a statue. Ask him to be himself, decisive, loose, aggressive. The rest of the roster reads that energy. Teammates trust Salter because they know the resume and they have felt the gravity he creates when the run threat is real. Receivers get more space. Backs see lighter boxes. The line settles because the launch point moves. Defense gets a breather because drives stack first downs instead of three and outs on schedule breaks. Fans, bring the juice and cut the noise. Outside narratives, especially from people who do not live in the film room, miss the job by job details that decide who plays and why. Deion’s message has been consistent, align, compete, finish. Why not us. That only works if the stadium backs the decision and lets this group grow through the discomfort without turning every series into a referendum. Wyoming next. Get it done. Put one voice in the huddle, keep Salter’s feet live, and let the offense breathe. The path forward is not complicated, clarity over chaos, rhythm over rotation, trust over chatter. Colorado can still make something real of this season if they choose conviction right now.
