The Denver Broncos open their 2025 season against the Tennessee Titans, a matchup that immediately tests how Sean Payton’s offseason decisions hold up under pressure. Every roster is a reflection of choices, and Denver’s approach to free agency may already be coming back under the microscope. The Broncos chose not to chase several high-profile free agents along the offensive and defensive lines this offseason. Instead, they doubled down on development, banking on younger players and internal improvement. That gamble was about building long-term continuity, but Week 1 presents a challenge that could expose short-term weaknesses. Tennessee is built around physicality. Their defensive front, led by Jeffery Simmons, will test Denver’s retooled offensive line from the very first series. Protecting quarterback Bo Nix in his second year is priority number one, but this is where passing on veteran linemen in free agency could sting. If protection falters, Denver’s offense risks starting the season behind schedule. On the other side of the ball, Denver’s defense will face Derrick Henry and an offense that thrives on power runs. Denver added speed at linebacker and in the secondary, but critics argue they missed opportunities to bring in proven run-stoppers. Depth is better than last year, but depth on paper is different from lining up against one of the league’s most punishing backs. Payton’s philosophy is clear: avoid splash signings, build a flexible roster, and trust his system to develop players. That approach has merit, but Week 1 in Nashville will provide a reality check. Fans do not want to hear about patience if protection breaks down and Henry racks up yards in the opener. It is only one game, but it carries weight. A strong performance validates Denver’s offseason restraint. A poor showing invites questions about whether the Broncos underestimated how much immediate veteran help they needed. Free agency is always a gamble. Denver placed its bet on youth, system, and internal growth. Now the test comes quickly, in Week 1, against an opponent built to expose the very areas where Denver chose not to spend.
